15% tax for working backpackers in Australia
Foreigners on working holiday in Australia face paying a 15% levy on every dollar they earn. That’s the new proposition from Australian minister of Finance Finance, Scott Morrison.
The new “backpacker tax” proposal is lower than the government’s original plan for a 32.5% rate. Tourism operators and farmers were angered by the planned taxrate because they feared it would deter tourists from choosing the country as a destination.
About 600,000 backpackers head to Australia every year, many finding work picking fruit.
